Sermon by Dr. Robert de Wetter Senior Pastor, Snowmass Chapel Sunday, December 13, 2015 Sermon Notes What is the Good News? 1. Lots of bad news and awful headlines. 2. Book, The Year of Living Biblically. Attempt to live by all biblical laws. 3. Old Testament Law. A. 613 laws. B. Three kinds of laws. Moral. Civil or Social. Ceremonial. C. All about guiding people to be set apart for God. If laws were kept, God was happy. If laws were not adhered top, God was unhappy and there were consequences. Got right with God by doing right. D. Some laws compassion-based and involved caring for those on the margin. E. If have to do right to get right with God, it is very bad news. 4. The Good News. A. Lives not supposed to be rule bound, but rather relationship with Jesus driven. B. None of us is capable of making God happy through perfection and keeping all the laws. This is bad news. C. But the good news is that God approves, loves, accepts and forgives us no matter what we do or don’t do, no matter what. We are right with God through Jesus. D. We do right not to get right, we do right because we are right with God. E. Word for this is grace. 5. Does our behavior matter then? A. Behavior, conduct, integrity, choices, values all matter profoundly. B. But, all of these things matter precisely because they don’t when it comes to getting right with God. C. This is the Gospel, which means good news. D. The ticket to God’s love, forgiveness and eternity is already in our pockets. E. The Gospel Message. Through Jesus we are right with God. God loves us without bounds. We are forgiven by God. We are in relationship with God now and for eternity. F. Called to respond to grace by what we do for others through loving action and to do so with joy.
