Sermon by Dr. Robert de Wetter Recorded at Snowmass Chapel Sunday, August 25, 2013 Sermon Notes - Created, Gifted, Called 1. Like a warehouse, many of us store things in our minds. Memories, feelings, heartaches, and joys. But we also story basic assumptions about life. Our beliefs about why things are the way they are affect everything. 2. We live at our own peril if we don't take time to be aware of what our basic beliefs are. We also need to learn to work through and let go of basic beliefs that aren't doing us much good. 3. Our assumptions and beliefs are malleable and can be changed if we are open. 4. The prophet Jeremiah wrote and spoke about a very difficult time in Judah, the southern part of the Promised Land. 5. Jeremiah 1 verses 5-8 are astonishing. While they are about a particular person in a particular place and time, the words God's uttered are relevant for all of us. 6. Nowhere in scripture does it state that some people are not created by God. Nowhere does it say some don't have God given gifts. Nowhere does it say some people do not have a God given purpose. We are all like Jeremiah. We are all created by God, gifted by God, and had a God given purpose. 7. There is a lot of scripture to support this. Some examples are Psalm 139, Romans chapter 12, Ephesians 1, and the Gospel of John where Jesus says, "Remember you did not choose me, I chose you." 8. Where are you with the idea that God created you, gifted you, and calls you? Is your belief in this strong or is it just a considered possibility? 9. How might life be different each and every day if you embraced this truth? 10. What names do you have for yourself down deep inside? Where is your identity not in alignment with the idea that you are created, gifted, and called by God? 11. In some ways the story about Jeremiah is a story about God giving Jeremiah a new set of names. The names of Created, Gifted, Called. Jeremiah's story is our story and God gives us these names as well. Wake up each morning, use these names, and see what happens. Use these names when referring to others in your own mind and see what transpires.
