The Kamila Quartet Sunday, July 15, 2018 Snowmass Chapel Founded in 2016 under the auspices of the Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music, the Kamila Quartet has worked closely with Kenneth Goldsmith, Norman Fischer, Ivo Jan van der Werff, Roger Tapping, Paul Kantor, and James Dunham. The Kamilas have also played for the Shanghai and Juilliard Quartets in masterclasses sponsored by Chamber Music Houston. The Quartet was honored with invitations to attend the 2017 and 2018 editions of the Robert Mann String Quartet Institute in New York City, where they participated in intensive masterclasses and performances centered around the pedagogy of Robert Mann, founding first violinist of the Juilliard String Quartet. While at the seminar, the Quartet’s mentors included Samuel Rhodes, David Geber, Kazuhide Isomura, Mark Steinberg, and Nicholas Mann. The Kamila Quartet was invited to participate in the Center for Advanced Quartet Studies at the Aspen Music Festival and School, where they are summer fellows. Individually, members of the Kamila Quartet have previously participated in the Aspen Music Festival and School, Tanglewood Music Center, Yellow Barn Young Artists Program, Madeline Island Chamber Music, and the Encore Chamber Music Festival. The group’s members hold degrees from the Cleveland Institute of Music and Rice University. The Kamila Quartet performs frequently in Houston and made their Da Camera debut this year as participants in the “Beethoven for All” concert series, as well as their Chamber Music Houston debut at the Sicardi Gallery. The Kamilas also recently performed with world-renowned pianist Jon Kimura Parker. The quartet takes its name from Kamila Stösslová, the romantic muse of Leoš Janáček, who inspired some of the composer’s greatest works.
