Sermon by Charla Belinski Assistant Pastor and Director of Children, Youth & Families Snowmass Chapel Sunday, September 06, 2015 Sermon Notes Mark 7:24-30 (note: this story also appears in Matthew 15:21-28) Jesus: “It is not fair to take the children’s food and throw it to the dogs.” Was Jesus tired and irritable? How very human! Was he foreshadowing the Gentiles’ eventual inclusion into the Kingdom of God? Was it a test? Was Jesus simply being rude? Jesus’s teachings were very focused on the Jews, not Gentiles who were seen as religiously unclean. The woman persisted. She dared to argue: “Even the dogs eat the children’s crumbs.” In other words, “If you are here for the Jews then I am happy to have what is left over. Even your leftovers are enough.” She persuades Jesus through her logic/wisdom and Jesus immediately blesses her for her faith. Tenets of our faith journey: Persistence Tenacity Humility Examples of Persistence and Tenacity: Gen. 32:22-31 Jacob wrestled with God and would not let him go until God blessed him. Matt. 9:20 Hemorrhaging woman followed Jesus in order to be healed Luke 18:1-8 Parable of the persistent widow: "Jesus told them this story so that they might pray always and not lose heart." Persistency cannot be used to limit God to the frame of our own thinking. There are times that God’s answer may be “no” because he has a greater purpose, and he grants us grace to move on with life (see 2 Corinthians 12:8-9). God gives grace to the humble (Proverbs 3:34; 2 Peter 5:5). If we dare to take a chance on Jesus, he will in turn take a chance on us.
