Sermon by Charla Belinski Assistant Pastor Snowmass Chapel Sunday, September 27, 2015 Where do you place your faith in times of great struggle? * Periods of rapid change, unreliable situations, fleeting moments of joy that turn quickly to storms, beautiful parts of us that were there yesterday literally fall out of our lives. * The autumn seasons of our lives are disconcerting. They can induce confusion, upset, anxiety, depression, a need to flee for warmer climes. * What's different about true autumn is that we know the spring WILL come. We have FAITH in the coming of the spring. There's peace in our knowing. * Where is your faith in the autumns of your life? Elijah 19:1-8 Elijah feared for his life, despite having just proven the mighty power of God! * Confidence to profess faith in God among others. * We sometimes lose our faith when comes to ourselves. We give our faith away. Matthew 8:23-26 Jesus calms the storm * For Jesus, the question is not “What are you afraid of?” but "Why are you afraid?" * “How in light of my presence can you be afraid when you should have faith?” * In Scripture, doubt is not the opposite of faith; fear is. Jesus never chastised doubters, saying "yes of little faith." But he did to the disciples in the boat. * When the storms come we come undone because a boat anchored to itself is not anchored at all. How do you anchor yourself to God? * How do you shore up your faith so it's there when you need it? * Like a muscle, exercise your faith daily. The opposite of fear is not courage. The opposite of fear is faith. * President Dwight D. Eisenhower: “We face the threat—not with dread and confusion—but with confidence and conviction.” * “We fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” (2 Cor. 4:18)
