Sermon by Dr. Robert de Wetter Sunday, July 5th, 2015 Senior Pastor, Snowmass Chapel Sermon Notes Why? Part 1—July 5, 2015 Asking why is part of what it means to be human. Why do I exist? Why am I here at this time? Why did this happen? When we are willing to engage ultimate “why” questions, our lives move from blandness to passion, passivity to action, confusion to clarity, observing to serving, and from being a taker to an extraordinary difference maker. It is vital to ask why, not only for people, but for organizations of any kind. Why life? Why Snowmass Chapel? Why does the Chapel matter? Matthew 22:34-40. Might just be the most important passage in all of scripture. Jesus is challenged to define the bottom line of it all. Jesus is crystal clear. Love. Love God. Love people. Why life? Why faith? Love. Supported by 1 John chapter 4. It is here that love is defined, the source and effects of love are described, and ultimately the purpose of everything. God is love. It not surprising that love cannot be fully understood. God is the source of love. When we love we are in relationship with God as God is love. And as God is love, love and fear are not compatible. Mission statements, strategic plans, goals and objectives are all important for the Chapel. But such things can become too complicated as the why of the Chapel and our lives is astonishingly straightforward and crystal clear. All about love. Period. It does not matter how holy, religious, sanctimonious, knowledgeable, we or the Chapel is in the end. In the end it is about love and if it is not about loving God and people, “it ain’t of God.” This kind of love is neither mushy nor sentimental. Love itself, in the flesh, Jesus, hung on the hard wood of the cross for us all.
